Server-based virtualization

This section deals with various server-based approaches to desktop virtualization. Some solutions are bare-metal virtualization, meaning you won't need any OS installed on your hardware. Others, like VMware Server, can only be installed on top of a host OS.

Desktop-based virtualization

If you're interested in running a few virtual machines simultaneously on top of your desktop's OS, these are your options. Desktop-based virtualization is a special class of lightweight applications which allow you to create and manage VMs with minimal changes to your existing OS.
