How To Convert VMware Server 2.0 Beta VMs into VMware Server 1.0.4

I've just finished the first round of VMware Server 2.0 beta testing, and although I quite like the product, it's still not stable enough for my needs, and so I've decided to fall back to VMware Server 1.0.4.

But what happens is that every time you try to use the VMware Server 2.0 virtual machine in VMware Server 1.0.4, you get an error like this:

VMware Server Console error message

"Configuration file was created by a VMware product with more features than this version" may be a correct statement, but chances are that you won't need any of the new features of VMware Server 2.0 to use standard VMs.

Because of this, you can use a simple hack to make the new VMs work with older version of VMware Server: simply change the hardware version back.

Disk Performance Tips for VMware Workstation

Lately I've been doing a lot of research with virtual machines created in VMware Workstation. And one of the first things you become conscious about is that disk performance in your virtual machine is far from being ideal. Don't be too quick to blame VMware though, there's quite a few reasons related to poor I/O, and that's why I decided to give you a few tips to achieve maximum performance.

VMmark results page: virtual performance comparison

Seeing that Sun Microsystems just entered the official VMmark results page, I thought I would share the news here and explain what VMmark is.

VMmark is the first industry-standard virtualization benchmark – a free product from VMware which allows you to test the performance of your virtual environment by running various workload scenarios on your virtual appliances.

Just like in conventional TPC-based testing, there is a server which runs the workload scenario, and there clients which interact with it triggering different developments of such scenarios.

Website updates

You may have noticed already, but I've started building the content up. Naturally, I'd like this first step to cover the major players in desktop virtualization, and that's how the VMware section was created.

Apart from providing general information about the company, the VMware page has a few more sections:

  • VMware Linux
  • VMware Converter

Let me know what you're most interested in, and I'll be sure to prioritize the future sections. I'm not new to VMware solutions, but still find quite a lot of new and exciting products and features to discover and share with you.

First impressions of the latest VMware Converter

With VMware updating their P2V migrationg solution to VMware Converter 3.0.2 a few weeks ago, I was looking forward to finally trying it on my workstation.

It worked like a charm, and left positive impressions.

There are two kinds of VMware Converters: Starter Edition and Enterprise Edition.

I've used the Starter Edition, which is available as a free download. It supports only hot cloning of your desktop, which means the resulting image may be not perfect – your OS will be aware of being cloned.

Enterprise Edition comes with a boot cd which does a cold cloning, meaning you will get exactly the same image of your OS which wouldn't even suspect it was virtualized.

I liked the choice of the source and target environments for P2V conversion. Now only can you use a physical system (local and remote cloning options are available), but a number of most popular virtualization technologies and images is supported, like Microsoft Virtual PC or Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery image. And, naturally, alll the VMware own virtualization solutions can be used to convert your virtual machine from.

Destination environment also provides you with a choice between an image for VMware ESX server or a standalone virtual machine which can be used with VMware Workstation or VMware Player.

I'll play with the Converter a little more before I can write a full-scale review of it, but even at this early stage it appears to be one of the best and easy to use P2V solutions I've seen so far.

Have you tried VMware Converter yet? What do you think of it? Is there anything better? Let me know in the comments area.
